Paperback

SORROW AND DISMAY is an illustrated meditation on the horror and stupidity of the Great War. The selected poems are by Siegfried Sassoon, a British officer. Sassoon documented trench warfare in poems soaked with pain. He confronted the reader with details of tedium and battle on the Western Front. He wrote with sarcasm on the motives of people in power and the absurdity of romantic views of war. He was masterful in capturing the language of soldiers and wartime trauma.

Sassoon is one of sixteen World War I poets commemorated in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey.

The images in this book complement Sassoon's poems and are in sympathy with his anti-war views.

Includes 44 war poems, 24 illustrations (color and BW), Foreword, and Index of First Lines.
