The first years of the Great War were dismal for the Russians, fraught with strategic failures and heavy losses. The Brusilov Offensive, however, turned the tide in the east as the attack on Austria-Hungary forced Germany to divert western forces. This intimate timeline of the "June Advance" tracks the campaign which, despite once again proving devastating in human loss numbers, featured new and innovative tactics — including the use of shock troops.
