Paths of Glory

88 Minutes

Based loosely on the true story of five French soldiers executed for mutiny during World War I, this 1957 film - directed by Stanely Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas - depicts the futility and irony of the war in the trenches when a French general orders his division on a suicidal mission to take a well-defended hill from the Germans. The mission proves a failure - many soldiers are unable or unwilling to leave the trenches - and the general decides to make an example out of the "cowardly" soldiers.
